KAIFI AZMI – Biography, Inspiring Poem, AURAT (Woman) on Equality, in Eng and Hindi … Best Film Songs: Videos, BG and English Translation

One of the most brilliant and visionary Poem of all times, AURAT (Woman) was written during the mid 1940s by Kaifi Azmi, renowned Indian Poet, Lyricist, Writer and Social Activist.

Kaifi Azmi (1920 – 2002) कैफ़ीआज़मी  کیفی ا عظمی was born in Uttar Pradesh (UP), North India and moved to Mumbai and its Hindi Film Industry / ‘Bollywood’ during the mid 1940s when World War – 2 was raging, and India was also gaining her independence. His wife is Shaukat Kaifi / Shaukat Azmi, originally from Hyderabad, who later evolved into a respected character Actor in Hindi-Urdu Theater and Films.

Aurat was written by a young Kaifi, in his 20s, for all women, especially including those of India and South Asia, who were supposedly along with men gaining their independence (still afar from it), advocating equality as a simple, basic right which can’t be denied. The Azmi couple truly lived their Progressive Ideals of Equality and Justice, believing, creating and propagating Art as also a tool for Social Change. Their daughter, actor and activist Shabana Azmi on the Poem: “…father wrote ‘Aurat’ asking women to stand shoulder to shoulder with men, not two steps behind. In life, I saw the same thing in their relationship.” In another interview: Aurat is my all~time favorite poem of Abba “written…when women were supposed to sit at home, he dared to say, Uth meri jaan, mere saath chalnaa hai tujhey / Get up my love, you have to walk with me.

Shaukat Kaifi on  Kaifi’s progressive ideas in her book Kaifi & I: A Memoir ($) Kaifi & I: A Memoir (Rs) (edited and translated by Nasreen Rehman), paraphrased: She recounts a mushaira (recitals at gatherings of poetry lovers, usually in Urdu) she attended in her hometown Hyderabad (in South India), Feb, 1947 where he recited this stimulating poem Aurat, and the effect it had on her (which proved to be the spark, and in a way, the foundation for their lifelong romance, of equals). She says: “I fixed my gaze on Kaifi, convinced that he had written this poem for me, and I alone had the right to march with him. I was stubborn, proud, headstrong, and always ready to raise my voice against a perceived injustice. It became clear to me that only a man with progressive views about women could be my husband.”

Shabana Azmi’s Interview Quotes with Gowri Ramnarayan and Outlook India Magazine

AURAT  ♀  WOMAN

English Translation by http://SundeepDougal.tripod.com/kaifi.html#aurat  @SundeepDougal

Get up, my love, you have to walk with me

Today
sparks of war waver in the air
time and life have the same spirit
delicate decanters hiss with the heat of rocks
beauty and love harmonize melodiously
You too have to be ignited by the fire that burns me

Get up, my love, you have to walk with me

Life is in struggle, not in the restraint of patience
The blood of pulsating life is not in trembling tears
Fragrance lies in free-flight, not in the tresses, of hair
There is another Paradise which is not by the side of men
On its free pathways too you have yet to pirouette

Get up, my love, you have to walk with me

For you
burning pyres wait at every corner
death disguised as duty
your every delicate gesture, a curse
nothing but poison in the breeze
Change the season if you wish to flourish

Get up, my love, you have to walk with me

History has not known your worth thus far
You have burning embers too, not merely tears
You’re reality too, not a mere amusing anecdote
Your personality is something too, not just your youth
You’ve to change the title of your history

Get up, my love, you have to walk with me

Emerge out of
ancient bondage, break the idols of tradition,
the weakness of pleasure, this mirage of fragility
these self-drawn boundaries of imagined greatness
the bondage of love, for this too is a bondage
Not merely the thorns on the path but you have to trample on flowers too

Get up, my love, you have to walk with me

Shatter
these resolve breaking suspicions of sermons
these vows that have become shackles
this too, this necklace of emeralds
these standards set by the wise men
You have to turn into a tempest, bubble and boil over

Get up, my love, you have to walk with me

You are Aristotle’s philosophy, Venus, Pleiades
You control the sky, the earth at your feet
Yes, raise, fast, raise your forehead from the feet of fate
I too am not going to pause, nor will the time
How long would you falter, you have to be firm

Get up, my love,  you have to walk with me

Apart from a record five National Film and four popular Filmfare Awards (India’s Oscars), Shabana Azmi’s also the recipient of the International Gandhi Peace Prize, whose other recipients include Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. In 2012 she was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of the highest Civilian Honors by the Republic of India.

KAIFI AZMI’s Bio in Brief

Kaifi Azmi was born in 1920 at Azamgarh, north of Varanasi city in eastern part of Uttar Pradesh (UP), India’s most populous State (of the Ganga River Basin) in a rich family of landlords –  in one of India’s poorest regions. He full name was Sayyid Akhtar Husain Rizvi. As per the norm amongst well off Muslims in undivided India, apart from Urdu and local (Hindi–Bhojpuri) dialects Kaifi Azmi had formerly learned Persian and atleast basic Arabic. (Urdu’s a beautiful, harmonious blend of Hindi, Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, other MidEast & Central Asian languages and local North Indian dialectics, ethnic languages. Because it uses the best of so many sources, it’s fair to say it’s also thus one of the world’s most articulate languages, perfect for poetry for instance.)

At age eleven (in 1931), Kaifi Azmi wrote his first Ghazal (long lyrical poem with many couplets) and somehow managed to get himself invited to a mushaira (recitals at gatherings of poetry lovers, usually in Urdu) and over there, he recited the lead couplet of this ghazal which was highly appreciated by the audience as well as the president of the mushaira, Mani Jaisi, but many people, including his father, considering his age thought he had recited his elder brother’s Ghazal. When his brother denied this, his father and his clerk decided to test his poetic talent. They gave him one of the lines of a couplet and asked him to write a Ghazal in the same meter and rhyme. Azmi accepted the challenge and successfully completed a beautiful Ghazal ( Itna to Zindagi Mein Kisi ki Khalal Pade ), which went onto become a rage in undivided India, immortalized further when it was sung and recorded by legendary ghazal singer, Begum Akhtar.

Kaifi Azmi’s progressive father wanted to send him to a British run college that imparted modern education & English, but he faced stiff opposition from the elders of the family who wanted Kaifi to become a religious theologian. Tey prevailed and young Kaifi was sent to a very reputed Islamic theological institution in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh’s capital, Sultan ul Madaris But an activist against injustice from his early youth, Kaifi created many problems for the institution, forming a Student’s Union and getting the students to strike to get their demands fulfilled. The College authorities ultimately had to expel Kaifi Azmi for these activities.

Kaifi continued writing and reciting his poetry in the form ofShers (short poetic couplet/verses, oft with profound purpote),Nazms and Ghazals in Mushairas in his home state of UP. His poetry was in Urdu and Urdu-Hindi (Hindustani, which uses words from both sister languages of South Asia). In the 1940s his idealist thought and vision made him get involved in India’s Freedom Struggle against the British Raj, and during the Quit India agitations he became a prominent member of the Left leaning Progressive Writers’ Movement of India (Anjuman Tarraqi Pasand Mussanafin-e-Hind), who gave India some of her most brilliant writers, poets, theater & film actors and directors. Kaifi’s first collection of poems, Jhankar (beautiful sounds of gaiety) was published in 1943.

In 1943-44, at age 24, leaving behind the life of comforts, he started organizing workers’ unions with the Communist Party and fighting for their rights in the textile mills of UP’s industrial city of Kanpur, whilst continuing writing, and reciting his poetry at various mushairas across India.

Soon thereafter, few years before India’s independence, Kaifi, like many other members of the Progressive Writers’ Movement shifted to Mumbai. which was emerging as India’s industrial & business capital. to work as a trade unionist and write for the Communist party’s Urdu papers, including Qaumi Jung (“People’s War”). There was also a hope of finding meaningful work in the burgeoning Hindi Film Industry  In Feb, 1947 he met the beautiful and enlightened Shaukat at a mushaira in Hyderabad where he was invited. Discovering that they shared many common interests like poetry, theater along with a passion for progressive ideals, justice, equality they fell in love and deciding to share their lives together, married in the same year.

Finding his feet as a Film Lyricist in the 1950s he really came into his own late 1950s on whilst working with some of the most prominent directors and music composers of the time. Overall he wrote 75 odd film songs from the early 1950s to early 1980s, most of which are adored and repeatedly played as classics now, truly some of the most romantic as well as poignant songs ever. He also wrote the dialogues of a few prominent Hindi films, including Heer Ranjha, on the legendary lovers, which was entirely in verse. Throughout this period, till the 1990s he wrote, recited and published countless ShersNazms and Ghazals.

In the movie Dharmendra plays a sensitive writerpoet, Ashok who slowly brings Sharmila’s character, Anupama/Uma out of the shell she has grown into because of a strenuous relationship with her alcoholic father who has always blamed her for his wife’s death during Anupama’s birth.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anupama_(film)

Anupama, the thus far subdued woman is slowly realizing the awakening of love, for Ashok, and thus resurrecting. In the song she sings about her thus animated innermost feelings, of love & romance, that she enunciates – are too intricate, complex to express in words. Music is by Hemant Kumar, another legend, as is the singer Lata Mangeshkar.
